Tracking the Careers of STEM Doctorates

Understanding the careers of science and technology doctorates keeps America competitive

The Survey of Doctorate Recipients (SDR) is the premier source of data on the career outcomes of U.S.-trained science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) doctorate holders. The insights the SDR provides into the demographics and professional development of science and technology doctorates help keep the U.S. economy and its academic research sector competitive. The SDR is sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Health, and NORC has conducted the SDR’s biannual data collection since 2003. In 2015, at the request of the Office of Management and Budget, NSF almost tripled the size of the SDR’s sample, allowing, among other things, full representation of U.S.-trained doctorate holders who live and work outside the country.
